Called to testify and heavily accused, Spanish Prime Minister: Corruption investigation is a "drama"

According to the Spanish newspaper, the commission is investigating the so-called "Córdoba case", the case involves former Spanish Transport Minister José Luis Avalos, his former adviser Córdoba, and former secretary of the Labour Socialist Party to which Sanchez belongs, Santos Zelden. The aforementioned persons are facing corruption charges. The opposition People's Party accuses Sanchez of being the principal and says the charges against him not only the political party and government officials where Sanchez is, but also his wife and brother.

Bloomberg said on the 30th that this is the second time in modern Spanish history that a sitting prime minister has been summoned by a parliamentary investigation committee.

“The sources of the trade union’s funding are entirely legal and fully compliant,” Sanchez said in an interview with the Senate Investigation Committee, adding that there is indeed cash refund within the party, “but there are always receipts for all amounts.”

In response to alleged breaches by Avalos, Serdan and Córdoba, Sanchez reiterated that the Labour Party had made a “strong” response. He said: “Once the facts were disclosed, the Labour Party took decisive action. This is very different from the practice of other organizations.” Bloomberg said on 30th that Serdan was detained for alleged organized crime, bribery and money transaction. Avalos was also investigated for similar allegations and abuse of public funds. People’s Party lawmakers summoned Sanchez’s testimony, believing that he could not be unaware of what happened within the party or government spending.

"El Pais" said that the right-wing opposition, which holds a majority in the Senate, launched a fierce attack on Sanchez from the beginning. Senator Maria from the Navarro People's Union (UPN) called on Sanchez to step down and wanted him to be held accountable for the "Cordo case". In addition, the chairman of the inquiry committee, Eloy Suarez of the People's Party, asked Sanchez not to criticize the committee, which the latter once called a "defamation committee". Suarez believes that it is a "very serious matter" to call the investigation committee so. Sanchez was blunt: "No, I think it's a farce."
