According to British media reports on October 30th, on October 25th, the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office arrested six beachgoers after receiving "multiple complaints about unauthorized nudity". The six lingered near the small mud boat ramp, an area about 1.6 kilometers north of Blind Creek Beach, a designated nudist beach.
The officer’s office said that Daniel Harrison, Donald Knapp, Gautane Lambert, Steven Mahanck, Elmer Quint and Nicholas Ramos were all charged with abusive exposure and organ exposure crimes. The officer’s office said that the naked beach is currently undergoing temporary renovation work, authorities acknowledging that this “may cause temporary inconvenience to beach visitors, but it does not allow the use of undetermined public areas.”
Since the renovation project began, some nudists have repeatedly tried to "move to the boat ramp north of the permit area", raising concerns among local residents. Since early September, officials have stepped up patrols in the area, patrolling on foot and all-terrain vehicles, and reminding tourists to pay attention to signs marking areas where nudity can be found.
Police have vowed to continue working in the area to educate beach visitors and implement policies. "Officers will continue to enforce all state laws and He County regulations related to Blinder Creek Beach, including violations involving unauthorized nudity," officials said. "Visitors are reminded to stay in clearly marked nudist areas and dress before leaving these areas or entering parking lots and public places."
Despite the numerous complaints, some locals said they did not understand why such extreme measures were being taken against nudists. "I think they are very poor. I wish this had not happened. What's the problem? If someone is naked, why would you feel offended? The question is who filed the complaint,"a beach tourist named Andy told the media.
Elsi Frederick, a beach tourist from Orlando, said: “I don’t feel like I’ve hurt anyone. I’m an independent individual and I have the same rights as they do.” but on a small sandy beach that isn’t naked, beach tourists say they want the rest of the area to cover up their bodies.
“Young families may come here, and in fact, the signs really say you have to wear good clothes or swimsuits,” one beach tourist said, “I think they need to stay within the area where nakedness is allowed,” another tourist added. In Florida, exposure to sexual organs is a mild crime, and if convicted, offenders could face up to a year in prison and about $7,000 in fines.
Online critics laughed at the matter, but seemed to agree that naked people on beaches that must be dressed should be punished. One user wrote: “I’m 73, I can prove that ‘no one wants to see that’.” Another user added: “Did the police search for them for weapons?”
