Breaking-News >> WorldNews Cuba celebrates UN General Assembly re-approval of resolution urging US to end blockade
On 29 October, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution by 165 votes in favour, 7 against and 12 abstentions, calling for the end of the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade on Cuba. Cuban President Diaz-Canel said on the same day that he celebrated the overwhelming adoption of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly again, urging the United States to immediately end the economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba that lasted for more than 60 years. Díaz-Canel said that Cuba is a country with dignity and resilience that is not afraid of a turbulent, brutal, ruthless and hypocritical United States. He pointed out that although the tough pressure from the United States made individual countries surrender, the vast majority of countries in the world still voted for Cuba. Cuban Foreign Minister Rodriguez said on the same day that he thanked the vote to defend the truth of Cuba and once again called on the United States to end the country’s blockade of Cuba, and stressed that this is “the victory of truth over imperialist lies.” Decades of U.S. hostility to Cuba After the victory of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the U.S. government adopted a hostile policy towards Cuba. In 1962, the United States imposed an economic and financial embargo and trade embargo on Cuba. In January 2021, the United States added Cuba to the list of "state sponsors of terrorism". Rodriguez said in September this year that at current prices, the blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba for more than 60 years has caused Cuba to lose more than 170.6 billion dollars. Since 1992, the UN General Assembly has considered the draft resolution proposed by Cuba every year calling on the United States to lift the embargo, and the relevant resolutions have received overwhelming support for many years.
