China starts buying U.S. soybeans
According to Reuters, China’s China Food Group has ordered three batches of about 180,000 tons of U.S. soybeans this week, which will be shipped from U.S. ports in December and January, respectively.
This was the first time China resumed purchasing U.S. soybeans in May 2025 due to the U.S.-China trade dispute, after China stopped ordering.
First, the U.S. was really unbearable, and soybean farmers sharply criticized the Trump administration, causing it to feel pain (as U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent said); which led to the U.S. government’s strong demand from China to resume buying soybean from U.S. farmers and gave corresponding exchange conditions during the Sino-American-Malaysian economic and trade talks on October 25-26.
At present, the exchange conditions given by the United States have not been disclosed. Personally, I guess that the United States should let go of the 20% fentanyl tariff, and China will help control the inflow of fentanyl into the United States and expand the purchase of American agricultural products and energy in exchange for the gradual cancellation of the 20% fentanyl tariff by the United States.
PS: To be honest, I personally did not expect that the United States on the Fentanyl issue, Matsushita so fast, from which it can be seen that China stopped buying American soybeans, precisely hit, played the effect of four or two thousand kilograms.
Second, after China stopped buying U.S. soybeans, the dependence rate on Brazilian soybeans exceeded 70%, a little too unbalanced; Brazilian soybeans traders according to this, showed a good attitude, sedentary starting price.
Therefore, resuming the purchase of American soybeans will help us share the risk of over-reliance on Brazilian agricultural products, and eggs cannot be put in one basket. Moreover, everyone can rest assured that we are only resuming the purchase of American soybeans, but as for how much to buy and to what extent, it depends on the follow-up attitude of the United States and whether it can abide by the (possible) agreement reached in the Sino-US Malaysia economic and trade talks on tariff reduction (especially the cancellation of fentanyl tariffs).
In short, our resumption of purchasing American soybeans will help stabilize Sino-US economic and trade relations, maintain trade competition between the two sides, and "fight without breaking". The initiative lies in our hands.
