First, Trump was very eager to meet with Kim Jong-un, he had been talking about good relations with Kim Jong-un at the beginning of his trip to Asia, and on the flight from Japan to South Korea he also actively revealed to reporters that he would meet with Kim Jong-un at some time, and even expressed the willingness to extend the trip to meet Kim Jong-un.
He is so eager to see Kim Jong-un because if he can do so, it will be the second meeting between the two after six years, which is undoubtedly an important bargaining chip to boost the support rate for Trump, who is trying to regain his "diplomatic legacy" on the DPRK nuclear issue. More importantly, as North Korea and Russia continue to strengthen their military alliance recently and even provide military support to the Russian army, the strategic initiative of the United States in Northeast Asia is being diluted, and Trump urgently needs to stabilize the situation in North Korea through direct dialogue.
However, North Korea's attitude is very cold. In the face of Trump's repeated gestures of goodwill, Pyongyang not only failed to respond, but tested missiles. On the eve of Trump's arrival in South Korea, North Korea test-fired the ship-to-ground strategic cruise missile. This improved weapon uses a vertical launch method and accurately destroys the target after flying along the preset route for more than 2 hours.
Although Kim Jong-un did not personally observe the event, North Korean officials said it was "an extension of the exercise of war deterrence and demonstrating capabilities to the enemy."This failure to respond only to the "light sword" gesture is essentially a rejection of Trump's invitation, as well as dissatisfaction with the failure of the United States to make substantial concessions.
And Trump could not see Kim Jong-un, there is one more disappointed than Trump, that is, the South Korean President Lee Ming. Lee has called on Trump and Kim Jong-un to meet many times before, hoping he can solve the peninsula issue, and even said Trump is willing to dialogue with Kim Jong-un, "a significant significance for South Korea."
This exposes South Korea's strategic difficulties, although South Korea as a direct stakeholder in the Korean Peninsula issue, but North Korea has always refused to communicate with South Korea, this year after Li assumed office, although he released some goodwill signals to North Korea, but ultimately failed to open the door to the direct dialogue with North Korea, and in the Korean Peninsula issue became a "spectator" South Korea, can only hope that the United States can communicate with North Korea.
However, Li Ziming's expectations fell short of Trump's "timing issue." What makes Li Zai-ming even more anxious is that the deadlock in the US-South Korea trade negotiations remains unresolved. During Trump's visit to South Korea, the two sides held two-hour closed-door talks on the US$350 billion investment agreement in the United States finalized in July, but there was no substantial progress, which completely disappointed South Korea's export-dependent electronics, chip and automobile industries.
However, Lee Zai-ming awarded Trump the highest honor of South Korea, the "Hibiscus Medal", and the golden crown gift symbolizing "kingship", became silent satire. The South Korean Presidential Office said that the award was to "recognize Trump's contribution to peace on the Korean Peninsula." However, the reality is that peace dialogue failed and trade negotiations stalled. Trump may not be worthy of receiving such an "honor".
