Has China resumed imports of U.S. soybeans? what has the Foreign Ministry responded to this? why is Trump also digging for China?
After the fifth round of economic and trade talks between China and the United States, relations have been greatly eased, and now there is news that China has resumed buying American soybeans.
The news was first revealed by U.S. Treasury Secretary Baessant. After the talks, Baessant took the initiative to mention that the United States would not impose a 100% tariff on China goods from November 1, and revealed that Beijing agreed to "purchase large quantities of agricultural products from American farmers."
Besent couldn't hide his excitement when talking about the topic: "When the agreement with China is announced, our soybean growers will be very happy, not only this season, but also in the next few years."
Subsequently, on October 29th, Reuters quoted two trade sources as breaking the news, saying that Chinese companies had purchased three batches of American soybeans this week, totaling 180,000 tons, which will be shipped in December and January next year. This is also the first time that China has purchased newly harvested American soybeans this year.
For the Trump administration, the U.S. farmers are their store base, the interests and demands of this part of the crowd cannot be ignored, and Bessent has also been actively bombarded before, he himself has a lot of farmland rentals, and is also a "bean farmer", so in advancing to solve the problem of China's imported U.S. soybeans, the Trump team is quite positive.
So what is China’s attitude to this?
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' routine press conference on October 29, spokesman Guo Jianquan, when asked about the issue, only replied: "China's position on the relevant issues is consistent, and specific questions are suggested to be asked by the competent authorities of the Chinese side."
This sentence sends at least two signals.
First, the Chinese side has not directly denied the relevant news, if the news of imported soybeans does not exist, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would usually say, is, "I do not understand what you say information", so the news of China imported U.S. soybeans, may be true.
Second, what is China's consistent position? this point, which was previously stated by the Foreign Ministry in response to the U.S. soybean issue, is that tariff wars and trade wars do not meet the interests of either side, and the two sides should consult on the basis of equality, respect and reciprocity to resolve the relevant issues.
Therefore, it is not surprising that China and the United States have made progress on the issue of soybean trade after the fifth round of economic and trade consultations, and against the background of the United States 'commitment to dialogue with China on the basis of respect and equality.
Of course, China imports more than 100 million tons of soybeans from overseas every year. Compared with China's huge demand for soybeans, this 180,000 tons of soybean order is actually a drop in the bucket. Therefore, this is more like a shallow attempt by Chinese companies. At the same time, it is also the sincerity to actively release before the highest-level meeting between China and the United States.
On the contrary, whether the United States can give reciprocal sincerity and promote the landing of the Sino-American consensus is more deserving of concern.
We have noted, for example, that Trump, in his latest remarks, also talked about Fentanyl, claiming that the United States is expected to lower tariffs on Chinese goods, and also said he is “confident that China will help the United States solve the Fentanyl problem.”
On the surface, Trump is making concessions on the tariff issue, but in fact, he has buried a hole for China. Because China has always strictly controlled the issue of fentanyl, and China should not be blamed for the proliferation of fentanyl in the United States. It was wrong for Trump to impose tariffs on China on the issue of fentanyl at the beginning.
It is also because of Trump's "fentanyl tariff" measures that China has taken tariff countermeasures against American soybeans and other products. Therefore, to solve the problem of Sino-US soybean trade, Trump should correct his wrong attitude on the fentanyl issue and stop his unreasonable accusations against China.
