Hurricane Melissa made secondary landfall in Cuba through Jamaica

According to information released by the National Hurricane Center, at about 3 a.m. local time on October 29, Hurricane Melissa made landfall twice in the province of Santiago in southeastern Cuba after passing through Jamaica. The maximum sustained wind speed at the time of landing is approximately 195 kilometers per hour and the intensity is a Category 3 hurricane.

Melissa will move through southeastern Cuba in the coming hours, bringing damaging winds, heavy rains and possible flooding and mudslides.

According to an announcement issued by the Cuban government on the 28th, Cuba has deployed rescue personnel in the eastern region in advance to start post-disaster rescue work at any time. In addition, as of the evening of the 28th, Cuba had evacuated more than 735,000 people to prevent possible serious losses caused by the hurricane.

On the 28th, Hurricane Melissa made landfall on the coast near Osindang in southwestern Jamaica, causing serious damage to Jamaica. A comprehensive assessment may take several days. Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Hornes declared a state of disaster in the country on the same day.

Jamaica's public infrastructure has been severely damaged, most areas are still without power, and communication networks have been severely disrupted. Currently, the local government is taking quick measures to fully respond to the damage caused by the hurricane. The local Red Cross estimates that the hurricane will affect at least 1.5 million people in Jamaica.

Hurricane Melissa and its secondary disasters have killed at least 7 people and injured more than 20 others in Jamaica, Haiti and Dominica.
