Xinhua News Agency, Los Angeles, October 28 (Reporter Tan Jingjing) NASA announced on the 28th that the experimental silent supersonic aircraft X-59 jointly developed by NASA and Lockheed Martin completed its first flight on the same day.

According to NASA official website, the X-59 is an experimental jet with a length of about 30 meters and a wingspan of about 9 meters. Its designed cruising speed is Mach 1.4 (i.e. 1.4 times the speed of sound). Its unique shape and noise reduction design can greatly reduce the sonic boom sound transmitted to the ground.

Lockheed-Martin said the X-59 took off from the company's factory in Palmdale, California on the same day and landed near NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. The flight was fully scheduled, verifying the aircraft's initial flight quality and atmospheric data performance.

The communiqué also said the X-59 aims to break the main obstacle that currently restricts commercial hypersonic aircraft¡¯s flight over land ¨C the noise problem.The X-59¡¯s development and flight testing will lay the foundation for the development of a new generation of hypersonic aircraft, which is expected to transport passengers and cargo efficiently and sustainably at twice as fast as today¡¯s passenger aircraft.

NASA¡¯s chief executive Sean Daffy said on social media platform X that the X-59 demonstrates the vitality of American aviation innovation, not only consolidating the U.S. leadership in aviation, but also potentially changing the way the public flies in the future.
