Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Jamaica, 7 dead in Caribbean

Hurricane Melissa landed on the southwest coast of Jamaica on 28 January, killing seven people in the Caribbean.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center news, Jamaica local time about 12 a.m., Hurricane "Melissa" landed near the coast of Ohien in southwestern Jamaica, the maximum wind speed at landing is 295 km per hour. It is expected that "Melissa" crossed western Jamaica on the 28th, that night arrived in eastern Cuba, and will bring strong winds and continuous rainfall to Haiti, Dominica and other places, with rainfall in the mountains of Jamaica or up to 750 mm.

So far, Hurricane Melissa and its secondary disasters have caused at least 7 deaths and more than 20 injuries in Jamaica, Haiti and Dominica.

The government has issued mandatory evacuation orders to the coast and parts of the capital, Kingston, since the 26th. Prime Minister Andrew Hornis said in a media interview on the 27th that the government was rapidly taking measures to mobilize emergency resources and coordinate national agencies to fully respond to the hurricane threat. The local Red Cross estimates that the hurricane will affect at least 1.5 million people in Jamaica.

According to the Cuban government, Cuba has evacuated 650,000 people in the eastern region and closed three local power stations to prevent the hurricane's potential serious damage.

Anne-Claire Fontan, an expert from the World Meteorological Organization, told the media that Hurricane Melissa may become "the storm of the century in Jamaica", and its destructiveness may be equivalent to major hurricane disasters such as Katrina in 2005 and Maria in 2017.
