Russian Foreign Minister: NATO promised not to expand eastward, but in fact it "has not stopped for a minute"

Speaking at the meeting, Lavrov said that NATO had pledged not to expand, but in fact "no minute has stopped" the expansion. he also said that Russia and some of its partners believe that "to ensure the stability and prosperity of the continent in which we live, we must strictly observe the principles of sovereign equality and indivisible security for all".

Speaking about Russia’s proposal for a new Treaty on the Reduction of Strategic Weapons, Lavrov said that Russia hopes the US will “react positively.”

According to the Kremlin website, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at a meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation on September 22, said that Russia believes that it is reasonable to maintain the status quo established by the new Treaty on Strategic Weapons Reduction after the expiry of the new Treaty on Strategic Weapons Reduction, in order to prevent further strategic arms race.

Russia and the United States signed the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in 2010, which aims to limit the number of nuclear warheads and delivery vehicles deployed by the two countries. The treaty officially came into effect on February 5, 2011. It was originally scheduled to be valid for 10 years, and was later extended to February 5, 2026 through consultation.
