According to Singapore’s United Morning Post website, informed sources said the long-term ceasefire talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan in Istanbul ended in a failure, a setback for regional peace after this month’s deadly conflict.
The talks were aimed at achieving lasting peace for the two South Asian neighbors, Reuters. Earlier this month, violent border clashes between the two countries killed dozens of people, the worst bloodshed since the Afghan Taliban took power in Kabul in 2021.
Although the two sides reached a ceasefire in Doha on October 19th, the second round of negotiations in Istanbul mediated by Turkey and Qatar failed to find common ground, and both sides accused the other side of taking responsibility for the failure of the negotiations.
Pakistani security sources say the Afghan Taliban is reluctant to pledge to contain the “Pakistan Taliban”, an armed group hostile to Pakistan, which is different from the Afghan Taliban.
An Afghan source familiar with the talks revealed that the talks ended as a result of a "tension confrontation" around the issue.The Afghan side claims that the Afghan Taliban has no control over the "Bata" attacks on Pakistani troops in recent weeks.
The conflict this month began with Pakistani airstrikes on several locations, including the Afghan capital Kabul, aimed at the head of the "Bata", followed by Afghan Taliban attacks on Pakistani posts along the 2,600-kilometre border.
