Google announced on the 27th a plan to restart a nuclear power plant in Iowa to power its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This shows that U.S. technology giants are broadening their channels to power AI infrastructure.

According to a press release jointly issued by Google and New Era Energy Company of the United States, the two parties announced that the Duane Arnold Energy Center, which was closed in 2020, will be put into operation again in 2029 "to help meet Google's growing cloud and AI infrastructure power needs in Iowa." The two parties have signed a 25-year power purchase agreement.

The communiqué also said that as the United States enters a new era of AI-driven innovation and opportunity, this strategic cooperation aims to help Google meet its business growth needs in a responsible manner.

In addition to the newly announced cooperation plan, Google has previously announced that it will cooperate with Elimental Energy Company of the United States to build three advanced nuclear power plants in the United States to ensure additional power supply.

The rapid development of AI has made it one of the main sources of growth in power demand around the world. The International Energy Agency predicted in April this year that power consumption in data centers would more than double by 2030.
