Slovenia's two ministers resign due to murder

Xinhua Agency, Ljubljana, October 26 (Reporter Zhou Yue) Slovenia's Minister of Interior and Minister of Justice resigned on the 26th after a man was attacked and killed by Roma in the southeastern part of the country. This incident has attracted widespread attention, once again highlighting the social integration of the Roma community in Slovenia and local security issues.

The victim, a 48-year-old man, was attacked outside a bar in New Mesto in the early morning of 25th. He died in the hospital because of his injuries. Police arrested a 20-year-old male suspect from the local Roma community.

Interior Minister Bostyan Boklukar and Justice Minister Andrea Katic filed their resignations hours after the victims died. Prime Minister Golob accepted their resignation and noted that public safety was “not guaranteed”. He also said the government would propose new legislative amendments within weeks to strengthen security management and improve the living conditions of vulnerable groups.

Roma are one of the ethnic minorities recognized by law in Slovenia. There are about 7,000 to 12,000 people in the country, accounting for about 0.4% of the total population, mainly distributed in the southeast and northeast regions. Although Slovenia passed relevant laws in 2007 to improve the environment of Roma communities, many Roma communities are still "informal settlements" with poor living conditions, limited employment and educational opportunities, and some areas even lack infrastructure such as water supply and electricity supply.
