U.S. threats to impose additional tariffs spark Canadian dissatisfaction

U.S. President Donald Trump on October 25 threatened to impose another 10% tariff on Canada, sparking discontent among Canadian officials and public opinion.

Lana Payne, the national president of the Canadian trade union, posted a message on social media on the same day, criticizing the threat of the US to "attempt to weaken the Canadian economy and seize Canadian resources for the US economy" and calling on Canada to "fight back".

Canadian public opinion generally believes that the United States cannot raise tariffs arbitrarily because of anger.

Trump said on Sunday that due to Canadian Ontario’s TV ads that raise tariffs against the United States, he intended to impose another 10% tariff on imports from Canada on the basis of current relevant taxes.

The Canadian federal government has not yet responded to the latest US threat. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney previously stated on the US suspension of US-Canada trade negotiations that Canada cannot control U.S. trade policies and will be committed to building its domestic market and exploring new markets such as Asia in the future.

Trump previously complained that this advertisement tried to exert influence before the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in early November. The U.S. Supreme Court is quickly reviewing the legality of most tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, and is scheduled to hear oral arguments in the first week of November.

Analysts pointed out that there is also a series of trade disputes behind the advertising dispute, such as Canada's recent reduction of U.S. car companies in the implementation of countermeasures in addition to production.According to the Associated Press, the Canadian government announced on 23rd that it will limit the number of cars exported to Canada free from tariffs by the Stylantis Group and General Motors.
