On the 25th local time, the open signing ceremony and high-level meeting of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime were held at the National Convention Center in Hanoi, Vietnam. More than 60 United Nations member states signed the convention. The theme of the event, “Fighting cybercrime – Sharing responsibility – Protecting our future”, includes guests from leaders of many countries and senior representatives, as well as representatives from various international and regional organizations. Vietnamese President Liang Qiang presided over the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime,Representatives from more than 60 United Nations member states signed the convention one after another. The United Nations Convention against Cybercrime was initiated by the United Nations in 2019. After five years of negotiations, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the convention on December 24, 2024.It is the world’s first legal instrument to combat cybercrime and the first international criminal justice treaty negotiated in more than 20 years. The Convention proposes a systematic approach to preventing and combating global cybercrime and ensuring that human rights principles are fully respected.This new global legal framework aims to effectively strengthen international cooperation to effectively combat cybercrime ranging from child pornography to transnational cyber fraud and money laundering by promoting traditional criminal investigation methods to adapt to today’s information and communication technology environment.
