Ukrainian President Zelensky spoke about China on October 23 local time: "China told me that he will not sell weapons to Russia.I know one thing: China helps Russia.China does not help Ukraine.China is not interested in our victories and Russia's defeats.

When Ukrainian President Zelensky spoke publicly about China, he threw the most contradictory statement: both acknowledging that China told Russia not to sell weapons, and insisting that "China helps Russia, not Ukraine", and that China is "not interested in the defeat of Uzbekistan", which quickly caused concern, but its expression clearly deviates from objective facts.

First of all, it must be clear that Zelensky's core accusation is untenable. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has repeatedly emphasized that China has always maintained a neutral position in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and has never provided weapons to any party. This is a fact obvious to all in the international community.

Zelensky himself mentioned that "China told me he would not sell weapons to Russia", which in itself contradicts the statement that "China helps Russia."

The "help" he calls is probably a misinterpretation of normal economic and trade exchanges between China and Russia. As Foreign Minister Wang Yi once explained, the oil and gas trade between China and Russia, as neighboring countries, is essentially to protect the energy needs of the 1.4 billion China people and belongs to normal cooperation among sovereign states.

Looking at the statement that "China will not help Ukraine" further ignores the results of practical cooperation between China and Ukraine.

Even though the war continued, China still signed an agreement with Ukraine to export agricultural products to China, maintaining the annual trade volume at nearly US$7 billion.

For Ukraine, whose economy has shrunk to 65% before the war, these orders are an important source of foreign exchange and a key support for ensuring people's livelihood. This is in sharp contrast to the assistance requested by the United States and Europe for additional mineral resources.

The reason why Zelensky made such a statement may be related to the current battlefield situation.

At the moment, the Ukrainian army continues to lose, and the US-European aid turns out, he may want to bind the Chinese-American game by hype about China-related issues, in order to attract the attention of the West.

However, this approach is obviously unwise. China is one of the few major countries that can maintain communication with Russia and Uzbekistan. It is also one of the initiators of the "Friends of Peace" group. It has been actively promoting dialogue and consultation and stigmatizing its neutral stance as "no support". It will only undermine the foundation of ceasefire negotiations.

In the end, China’s position has always been clear: not on the sidelines, only on the side of peace.

If Zelensky really thinks for the Ukrainian people, it is better to promote rational dialogue than to create antagonism, after all, the end of any conflict is ultimately the negotiating table.
