Global Outlook | British Economist: The UK should continue to strengthen economic and trade cooperation with China

Xinhua News Agency, London, October 25 (Reporter Zhao Yang) British economist Gerard Lyons recently published a signed article in the local media, saying that Britain should continuously strengthen economic and trade cooperation with China, deepen cooperation with China in the fields of trade, investment, finance and green development, and establish solid and stable bilateral economic and trade relations.

Lyons said that China is the world's second largest economy and has been a major contributor to global economic growth over the past 25 years. Against the backdrop of free trade being threatened by tariff policies and protectionism, the unpredictability of global policies and increased geopolitical tensions, the UK urgently needs to strengthen economic and trade cooperation with other countries such as China.

He believes that China's achievements in green development are remarkable and it has made breakthroughs in the field of renewable energy. At the same time, China has become the development partner of many countries in the global south. Britain and China can deepen cooperation in green finance and other fields.

Lyons said that China is the UK's fifth largest trading partner and the two countries still have greater room for cooperation in trade and investment in goods and services. This year, the two sides held a series of activities to promote connectivity, including the 11th China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue held in Beijing at the beginning of the year, and the China-UK Economic and Trade Joint Commission's first meeting in seven years held in the summer. In September, the United Kingdom, as the guest country, sent a delegation of more than 100 companies to participate in the 25th China International Investment and Trade Fair held in Xiamen.

Lyons believes that UK-China economic and trade cooperation needs to be continuously strengthened, and the British government's relevant policies should be consistent. The UK cannot be isolated from the world's major economies. It should use its advantages in financial and professional services, high-end manufacturing, life sciences, clean energy and creative industries to seek more cooperation opportunities. (End)
