On October 24, the 80th anniversary of the entry into force of the Charter of the United Nations, UN Secretary-General Guterres delivered a speech at the Security Council’s Open Debate on the Future of the United Nations, urging the Security Council to keep up with the public’s expectations for peace.
Guterres, who is visiting Vietnam, spoke in a video, with a short story story, urging the Security Council not to forget its original intention ofining international peace and security. In the spring of 1946, when the Security Council voting box was first turned on for check-in, people were surprised to find a note containing a message from box maker Paul Antonio: Can I vote first as a box maker?I hope to bring lasting peace to people around the world through your noble efforts.
Guterres said those who are fortunate enough to sit at the Security Council table have a responsibility: to live up to the trust of the people and invest resources in development and peace, not in war. Over the past 80 years, the Security Council has played an important role in maintaining international peace and security, at least avoiding wars between major powers. But at the same time, some members of the Security Council violated the principles of the United Nations Charter. Such a situation not only affects the role of the Security Council, but also erodes the credibility of the entire United Nations.
Guterres said the Security Council should listen to people’s calls for peace and security. There are no winners on the United Nations banner, only the olive branches of peace-builders.Guterres hopes that the Security Council reform will be an institution that will meet the challenges of the next 80 years and bring justice and security to everyone.
