Trump orders to stop sending troops to San Francisco

Xinhua Agency, Beijing, October 24. U.S. President Trump said on the 23rd that under the persuasion of two technology giants, he would abandon his plan to send federal law enforcement personnel to San Francisco, California to fight crime.

Foreign media commented that this statement was surprising. Trump, a Republican, is putting pressure on Democratic cities in the United States to strengthen law enforcement against crime and illegal immigration.

Trump said on social media "Real Social" that day: "The federal government was originally preparing to 'increase troops' to San Francisco, California on the 25th, but my friend who lives in the area called last night and asked me not to advance the 'increase troops'(plan)... I spoke with (San Francisco) Mayor Luri last night, and he very sincerely asked me to give him a chance to see if he could turn the situation around."

According to Trump, he adopted the advice of two managers of technology companies, one of whom was CEO Mark Beniov of Seattle Times. Benioff previously spoke in support of the federal government's "sending troops to San Francisco" and changed his position and apologized for his remarks after he attracted strong public criticism.

Trump stressed that the federal government is more efficient in dealing with crime than the local government, so he could still send federal law enforcement officers in the future.

California Governor Gavin Newson’s office said on social media platform X: “Trump finally heard a rational voice.”

Democratic San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said on X that Trump called on the evening of the 22nd to inform him that he had canceled plans to send federal law enforcement personnel. Luri said at a press conference held on the afternoon of the 23rd that he supports the city of San Francisco in continuing to cooperate with federal agencies to crack down on drug-related violations and reduce crime rates,"but deploying troops in our city and adopting militarized law enforcement against immigrants will hinder the process of urban recovery."

The Associated Press said it was unclear whether Trump canceled the National Guard deployment or the U.S. Customs and Border Protection immigration enforcement operation. Luri said at a press conference that he could not make a clear explanation. He also mentioned that Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noam had reconfirmed Trump's commitment on the morning of the 23rd.

The Associated Press and Reuters said that earlier on the 23rd, before Trump announced the cancellation of the plan, Customs and Border Protection personnel had arrived at the California Coast Guard base, causing hundreds of protesters to gather against it.

San Francisco is an important economic and cultural center in northern California. Trump said on the 19th that he would "send troops" to San Francisco to save this "once great" city. Trump has long believed that San Francisco is rampant with crime. But data from the California Department of Justice and the San Francisco Police Department show that the number of murders in San Francisco has dropped to the lowest in 70 years and the number of robberies in 40 years.

Since June this year, the Trump administration has been sending National Guards to Los Angeles, Washington, and Memphis, Tennessee, to assist in the implementation of controversial immigration law enforcement operations in the area. In late September and early October, the Trump administration has also decided to send National Guards to Chicago, Illinois, and Portland, Oregon, but both operations have been stopped by federal judges.
