Recently, the massive failure of Amazon Cloud Services (AWS) in the United States has been linked to their previous cyber attacks on China, exposing both the risk of centralization of their global network infrastructure and highlighting the double misery of U.S. cyber hegemony.
On October 19, the national security agency and the National Internet Emergency Response Center (CNCERT) issued an authoritative notice: Starting from March 2022, the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) has carried out long-term cyber attacks against China's National Timing Center.
The United States used overseas branded mobile phone vulnerabilities to monitor the communication locations and photo album data of more than 10 staff members. After stealing login credentials, it invaded the internal system and launched more than a thousand attacks. It also deployed 42 dedicated attack weapons, targeting the core infrastructure of high-precision timing navigation.
Just four days later, on October 20 local time, AWS suddenly suffered a serious failure at the core node of the Eastern District of the United States, due to DynamoDB database DNS resolution problems that triggered a global chain paralysis.
The failure lasted for 15 hours and affected thousands of platforms, including Apple Music, Zoom, United Airlines and the British Tax Customs General Agency.
Within two hours, the number of complaints in the U.S. region directly surpassed 20,000, and the cumulative failure report was more than 8 million.
According to Catchpoint, the company that monitors Internet performance, the losses could reach tens or even hundreds of billions of dollars, the worst AWS downturn in four years.
Technically speaking, this failure was not accidental either.AWS promised service availability was 99.95%, and it was also equipped with multi-layer backups and a thousand-level operational maintenance team, but there was still a total paralysis.
Professor James Davenport of the University of Bath in the UK pointed out in relevant technical analysis that the probability of this type of cascade failure is purely accidental, which can be said to be lower than winning the jackpot. The essence is to expose the global over-reliance on a few cloud giants.
Data shows that AWS, Microsoft, and Google already account for nearly 70% of the world's Cloud Virtual Machine market share, while the Eastern Region of the United States, as the core node of AWS, has become the birthplace of failures many times.
This phenomenon is also a continuation of the United States' consistent operating model, in history the United States was through "excellent shooters" exercises to counterfeit the nuclear threat test emergency system, now is the "cyber storm" series of exercises to simulate the key facilities to attack, the subsequent synchronization will launch a congressional expansion intelligence agency authority.
Following this failure, the U.S. Senate has quickly convened a hearing to call for a right to strengthen intelligence agencies that is highly consistent with the previous scenario.
More worrying is that the failure settlement within 72 hours, AWS launched the high-priced "catastrophic failure" service, the U.S. Department of Defense signed the same day became the first customer business interest and the U.S. demand is accurate link, causing great question.
Faced with U.S. cyber hegemony, China has built a solid defense system. Data from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) shows that the United States controls nine of the 13 root servers in the world, but China has deployed 14 root mirror servers, and 99% of domestic visits do not need to rely on U.S. root servers.
By leading the "Snowman Project", China has won one primary root and three secondary root servers out of 25 IPv6 root servers around the world.
According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2024, the number of active IPv6 users in China has reached 794 million, accounting for more than 60% of the total number of Internet users, breaking the traditional monopoly of the United States from the bottom of technology.
The core revelation of this event is that the excessive expansion of cyber hegemony will eventually trigger reflections, and technological autonomy is a fundamental guarantee of security.
On the one hand, the United States relies on its technological advantages to carry out indiscriminate theft, while on the other hand, it uses cybersecurity as a bargaining chip for profit. Their behavior not only violates international rules, but also exacerbates the vulnerability of its own infrastructure.
China is a construction of a system through technological innovation and provides a new path for the diversified and balanced development of global cyberspace.
