Financial Associated Press, October 24 (Editor Liu Rui) According to CCTV News reports, on Thursday evening, Eastern Time, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday evening that he would terminate all trade negotiations with Canada because the Ontario government in Canada released an advertisement containing former President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.
Trump issued the statement on his self-operated "Truth Social" platform. Trump wrote in the statement:
"The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has illegally used an advertisement that is faked about Ronald Reagan saying negatively about tariffs."
“They did so just to interfere with the rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court and other courts. Tariffs are critical to U.S. national security and economy.Given their bad behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada end here.Thank you for your attention to this event!”
The advertisement, Trump said, was made public by the Canadian Governor of Ontario on October 16.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford posted the ad on Facebook
In the one-minute ad, images of a large number of American families and workers were displayed, and President Reagan's voice said in a voice-over:
"When people say,'Let's impose tariffs on foreign imports,' it seems like they are doing a patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs."
"Sometimes this does work for a short time, but only for a short time … In the long run, this trade barrier hurts every American worker and consumer."
This passage of President Reagan's speech comes from a presidential radio address he made in April 1987.
Canada plans to launch anti-tariff advertising in the United States
On October 14, Ontario Governor Doug Ford said that the province would spend $75 million in U.S. advertising for this Reagan-critical tariff.
He also called himself a “loyal fan” of President Reagan and said: “We will repeat this message to every Republican electoral district across the United States.”
The advertisement clearly aroused dissatisfaction from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute.
Late Thursday night, the foundation said the ad released by the Ontario government distorted President Reagan's speech and that his remarks were edited without permission.
President Reagan Foundation and Research Institute express dissatisfaction with advertising on social platforms
Although the Reagan President Foundation and Institute did not specify what misleading the ad was, they said people were encouraged to watch unedited videos of his speeches on the foundation's YouTube channel.
Trump has made tariffs one of the core policies of his second term in the White House. In November this year, the U.S. Supreme Court will quickly review the legality of most tariffs of the Trump administration and hear oral arguments on the 5th, which is expected to determine the future fate of Trump tariffs.
