Palestinians condemn Israeli sovereignty bill on West Bank

On Monday, the Israeli parliament passed, with 25 votes to 24 in a preliminary vote, a bill extending Israeli sovereignty to the West Bank.

In this regard, Palestinian people from all walks of life strongly condemned and criticized it.

This bill, proposed by Israeli far-right lawmakers, advocates that Israel should "implement Israeli laws and exercise sovereignty in Jewish settlements in the West Bank, making them an inalienable part of Israel". This preparatory vote in the Israeli Parliament triggered strong condemnation and criticism from the Palestinian side.

Vassil Abu Yusuf, member of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organization:It is true that Israel was forced to suspend this genocidal war that lasted for more than 700 days and was full of destruction and killing, but Israel still tried to continue its aggression in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Some politicians are trying to push for a vote within the framework of the Israeli Knesset to completely legalize the annexation of the West Bank. Israel's actions reflect its disregard for resolutions of international legitimacy and international law, including its rejection of resolutions adopted by the United Nations Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly.

After the preliminary vote in the Knesset, the United States also expressed concerns and dissatisfaction. Palestinian analysts believe that this does not mean that the United States and Israel have differences in principle on this issue, but now is not the right time to continue advancing the matter. The United States does not want to create complications at this time point, intensify conflicts, and make the already fragile ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip reborn.

Haldun, an expert on Palestinian-Israeli issues:The United States is worried that the tension and continued rising situation in the West Bank will have an adverse impact on the current ceasefire situation in the Gaza Strip. The concern of the United States is not that there are principled differences between the United States and Israel. The United States is not opposed to Israel's annexation of the West Bank, but not at this time.
