Panama holds “flagging ceremony” to commemorate anti-American patriotic operation

Xinhua News Agency, Panama City, October 23 (Reporter Xu Yongzheng) The 22nd Panama "Flag Planting Ceremony" was held in the Knowledge City by the Panama Canal on the 23rd to commemorate the anti-American patriotic actions carried out by the Panamanian people to recover the sovereignty of the canal.

At the ceremony on May 2, 1958, the executive chairman of the Knowledge City Foundation, Jorge Arosemena, said that a group of Panama students, while at night, secretly wrapped 75 Panama flags in the then US-controlled canal area, “was the day of the awakening of Panama’s sovereign consciousness.”

Former President of Panama, Mireia Moscoso, served as an honorary flagship at the ceremony. In her speech, she recalled Panama’s full recovery of its sovereignty over the Canal in 1999 and recalled the historic moment of the transfer of the Panama Canal.

The Panama Canal, located in the middle of the Americas, along the Panama Strait, is a gateway channel between the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. The United States is the first major user of the Panama Canal. Since this year, Trump has repeatedly claimed to “return” U.S. control over the Panama Canal.

In 1903, the United States signed a treaty with Panama, which granted the United States a permanent monopoly on the construction and operation of the Panama Canal and permanent occupation of the Yunhe District. The Yunhe District strictly restricts the entry of Panamanians and prohibits the raising of the Panamanian flag. In the first half of the 20th century, Panama repeatedly negotiated with the United States on amending the unequal canal treaty, and anti-American protests broke out many times. Under the unyielding struggle of the Panamanian people and pressure from international public opinion, on December 31, 1999, Panama finally regained its management and defense rights over the canal, and all U.S. troops stationed in the Yunhe District withdrew.
