UN agency: More than 30 million people in Sudan need of humanitarian aid

Four United Nations agencies issued a joint press communique on the 23rd, saying that more than 30 million people in Sudan need humanitarian assistance, and the international community should take immediate action to alleviate the escalating humanitarian crisis in the country.

The International Organization for Migration, the United Nations Refugee Agency, the United Nations Children's Fund and the World Food Program said in a joint press release that senior officials from these four agencies recently visited Sudan and witnessed the country's humanitarian crisis. More than 900 days of armed conflict has destroyed basic services such as health care and education, leaving millions of people "on the verge of survival." Of the 17 million school-age children, 14 million are out of school.

The communique said that among the more than 30 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, there are nearly 15 million children and more than 9.6 million internally displaced persons. With the slowdown of fighting in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, and other areas, about 2.6 million people have returned home. However, many communities were destroyed in the war, returnees were unable to get basic service guarantees, and diseases such as cholera, dengue fever and malaria were spreading. Hunger and malnutrition remain serious, and thousands of people are at risk of death.

The communique said that the shortage of funds is an important challenge to deal with the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. So far, only a quarter of the humanitarian aid funds in Sudan, totaling $4.2 billion, have been raised. These United Nations agencies call on the international community to provide emergency funds to support the provision of durable solutions for displaced people; Call on relevant parties in Sudan to immediately stop hostilities, protect civilians and allow unimpeded humanitarian access to the country.

On April 15, 2023, an armed conflict broke out between Sudanese government forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force in Khartoum, and the fighting subsequently spread to other areas. The two-and-a-half-year armed conflict killed nearly 30,000 people.
