According to French media reports, the identities of the three men have not yet been revealed, and they were detained in prison in Lausanne along with 70-year-old Sarkozy. Police have taken action after threatening videos appeared on social media. In the video, one prisoner shouted, “We know everything, Sarkozy! the billions are back!” and vowed to take revenge on the deceased Libyan leader Gaddafi.
A spokesman for the Paris prosecution said on the 22nd: "After Sarkozy was imprisoned, three prisoners were arrested for threatening remarks. The prison authorities searched his cell and found two mobile phones." Police have formally opened a case to investigate the "death threat" incident.
For safety reasons, the French government has sent two police officers from the Presidential and Political Guard Service (SDLP) to station in Sarkozy's cell next to him around the clock to protect his safety.
Condemnation: Political Donations of Gaddafi
Sarkozy was imprisoned on Tuesday and sentenced to five years in prison, where he was convicted of illegally accepting huge amounts of cash provided by the late Libyan leader Gaddafi during the 2007 presidential campaign.
He was the first former French head of state to be truly imprisoned since Marshal Pétain, who collaborated with the Nazis after World War II.
Sarkozy’s cell is about 9 square meters wide, with bed, desk, shower, TV and fixed phone ($120 per month), but it is not allowed to use mobile phones. He can only go out alone once a day. The lawyer revealed that his night was “extremely difficult” and had filed an appeal, but is expected to be heard at least a month later.
Prison Threats and Political Reactions
Following the threatening video, far-right politician Marine Le Pen also shared the video on social media and commented, “I believe some people are happy with this situation, but millions of French people, like me, are disgusted.”
Le Pen himself was sentenced to four years in prison for alleged abuse of European Parliament funds and is currently under appeal and is temporarily released on bail.
In addition to Sarkozy, the video also mentions Ziad Takieddine, a Lebanese arms merchant believed to be a “money intermediary” between Gaddafi and Sarkozy.
"Iron-fisted President" Becomes Weak in Prison
Sarkozy, a former French Interior Minister, is known for his tough public security policies and is nicknamed the "iron-fisted police chief". He once advocated "cleaning the streets with high-pressure water guns" against unhealthy young people. Today, this background makes him a high-risk target in prison.
Sarkozy has previously been convicted of bribery of judges and illegal campaign finance cases, and is still facing multiple judicial investigations.
His wife, former supermodel Carla Bruni, has visited her husband and she has also been charged with allegations of involvement in a secret fundraising program called “Save Saco,” including “organized obstruction of justice,” with a maximum sentence of ten years in prison if found guilty.
