U.S. Department of Justice reaches settlement with University of Virginia to suspend investigation

Xinhua News Agency, Washington, October 22 (Reporter Yang Ling, Xiong Maoling) The U.S. Department of Justice announced on the 22nd that it had reached a settlement with the University of Virginia and suspended its investigation into the university.

The U.S. Department of Justice issued a statement on the same day stating that the University of Virginia agreed to abide by the Department of Justice's "Guidelines on Federal Funding and Discrimination" to ensure "no illegal racial discrimination in its university curriculum, enrollment, recruitment or other activities".The University of Virginia will provide relevant information and data to the Department of Justice every quarter before 2028.

CNN quoted a Trump administration official as saying that under the agreement, the University of Virginia would not pay any fees or fines for the settlement.

The University of Virginia is a top-ranked public university in the United States. Faced with pressure, James Ryan, president of the University of Virginia, announced his resignation at the end of June. According to reports, the Ministry of Justice launched an investigation into the "diversity, equity and inclusion" policy of the University of Virginia, and made Ryan's resignation a condition for the settlement of the case. The school's board of directors then accepted Ryan's resignation to avoid affecting the allocation of hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds.

On January 20th this year, Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office, abolishing the federal government's policy of "diversity, fairness and tolerance", pointing the finger at some American universities, and launching an investigation on many famous American universities such as Harvard University and Columbia University, demanding to eradicate anti-Semitism and adjust the enrollment policy inclined to ethnic minorities, otherwise he would face risks such as funding cuts or cuts. The University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University and Brown University have previously announced "rectification" agreements with the federal government.
