Breaking-News >> WorldNews Air Pollution Increases, India Tests Environmental Monitoring System
With the winter approaching, coupled with the fireworks burning on October 20 to celebrate the traditional Hindu festival lights, air pollution in major cities in India has been widely concerned, and its environmental monitoring system has become the focus of related topics. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported on the 21st that the Indian court ordered that only "green" fireworks with less pollution should be allowed to be set off, but many Indians still set off traditional fireworks during Diwali. Coupled with traditional pollution sources such as vehicle exhaust emissions, New Delhi's air quality index (AQI) measurement value on the 21st was 350, which was at a "very poor" level. According to a report by The Hindu News Agency on the 22nd, two important Indian environmental monitoring systems, the real-time air monitoring network in New Delhi and the national environmental noise monitoring network in Lucknow, have been exposed to serious technical defects. Although these systems were "huge" when they were put into use, they were "full of loopholes" in their working process, which not only damaged the public's trust, but could also endanger the international credibility of India's environmental monitoring. The U.S. Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) said that a recent report from the Delhi Auditor General's Office showed that of the 24 air quality monitoring stations installed by the Indian Air Pollution Control Board (DPCC) in New Delhi, 13 were installed in locations that did not meet technical standards. These monitoring stations are either located too close to trees, roads, high-rise buildings, or too close to unpaved roads, all of which can cause data distortion. The Hindu newspaper emphasized that official data often reports urban air quality as "moderate", but citizens are unable to breathe in severe smog. While environmental sensors in New Delhi are funded, there is no independent agency to oversee the operation of these monitoring systems. In order for monitoring data to gain confidence, relevant departments should strictly install sensors in accordance with technical standards and be guided by independent experts. Associated Press said the Indian government has implemented a series of measures to curb pollution, including regulating construction activities and restricting the use of diesel generators. Environmentalists said India needs to continue to promote clean energy development and develop long-term solutions such as stricter vehicle emissions reduction measures.
