Sudanese government announces resumption of operations at Khartoum International Airport

Xinhua News Agency, Cairo, October 22 (Reporter Seimi Zhang) Khartoum News: The Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism of Sudan issued a statement on the 22nd, announcing the official resumption of operation of Khartoum International Airport. This is the first time that the Sudanese capital airport has resumed operation since the armed conflict in Sudan for two and a half years.

The statement said that a Sudanese Badr Air plane landed at Khartoum International Airport that day, marking the end of a long-term suspension of air traffic in Khartoum. The operator of Khartoum International Airport said in a post on social media that the resumption of flights is "an important step in the recovery of Sudan's aviation industry and paves the way for the gradual resumption of air traffic in the future."

A source at Khartoum International Airport told news agency Xinhua news agency that the aircraft was landed without passengers and took off about two hours after landing and returned to the port of Sudan in the eastern Red Sea state city.

The Sudanese Civil Aviation Authority announced on the 20th that Khartoum International Airport will reopen on the 22nd, and will first gradually resume domestic flights. But earlier on the 22nd, Sudanese sources and witnesses told Xinhua Agency reporters that Khartoum International Airport was attacked by drones for the second consecutive day. Among them, sources familiar with the situation at Khartoum International Airport said that continuous drone attacks have caused minor damage to civil defense facilities and passenger terminals in the airport. As a result, the resumption of operations plan was once at risk of suspension.

On April 15, 2023, an armed conflict broke out between Sudanese government forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force in Khartoum. The fighting subsequently spread to other areas, killing nearly 30,000 people so far. Khartoum International Airport was severely damaged during the conflict and was long controlled by the Rapid Support Force and closed. In March this year, government forces recaptured Khartoum International Airport from rapid support forces and began restoration works in May.
