UN Secretary-General wants Israel to comply with International Court of Justice advisory opinion

UN Secretary-General Guterres’ deputy spokesman Haqq said on October 22 that Guterres hoped that Israel would abide by the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice of the United Nations on Israel’s responsibility for the occupied Palestinian territories.

At a press conference on the same day, Haaker said that Guterres believed that the International Court of Justice’s opinion was made in the context of the UN’s efforts to increase humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip and was crucial for the UN’s response to the tragic situation facing the people of Gaza.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia welcomed the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which stated that the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice comprehensively interpreted the responsibilities of Israel under international law and that Israel must ensure and assist in providing necessary humanitarian assistance.

At the request of the United Nations General Assembly, the International Court of Justice based in The Hague, the Netherlands, issued an advisory opinion on the 22nd, finding that Israel, as an occupying power, must fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law, facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, and ensure the United Nations Relief and Relief for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. Aid supplies provided by United Nations agencies such as the Agency (UNRWA) passed smoothly. The International Court of Justice held that Israel, as the occupying Power, must not use security reasons to prevent humanitarian relief activities in the Occupied Territory, and urged Israel to ensure that civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory receive basic necessities, as well as medical supplies and services.

In this advisory opinion, the International Court of Justice found that UNRWA had not violated the principle of neutrality and that Israel had failed to fully substantiate its allegations that certain UNRWA employees were associated with the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said it had "strongly rejected" the advisory opinion, saying it was a move to try to impose political sanctions on Israel.
