India resumes embassy in Afghanistan

Xinhua Agency, New Delhi, October 22. The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the 21st that it will officially upgrade its "technical mission" in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, to an embassy and will appoint a chargé d'affaires. The Afghan side welcomed this on the 22nd.

The Indian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the move reflects India’s determination to strengthen bilateral relations with Afghanistan in “all areas of common interest.”

Afghan government spokesman Mujahid welcomed India's move in an interview on the 22nd and said that "this move will enhance bilateral trust and cooperation."

Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Mutaqi made a six-day visit to India on September 9. India announced on October 10 that it will enhance its bilateral diplomatic relations and reopen its embassy in Kabul.

India closed its embassy in Afghanistan after the Afghan Taliban took over power in 2021. In 2022, India opened a technical representative office in Kabul to continue its cooperation with the Afghan government on humanitarian assistance.
