Aviation safety accidents occur frequently, a U.S. Senate committee passes airspace control bill

The U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Commission passed a two-party aviation safety bill on 21 January, requiring all aircraft in the control airspace to have the ADS-B system enabled to track the aircraft. In January this year, a U.S. passenger plane crashed into the river after colliding with an army helicopter, killing 67 people, and the helicopter failed to activate the system at the time of the incident.

ADS-B is a broadcast automatic correlation monitoring system, which can transmit data such as aircraft position to the air traffic control tower and other aircraft in the airspace. Civil aviation aircraft must enable the ADS-B system, but the Federal Aviation Administration in 2019 allowed military aircraft to shut down the system in rare circumstances.

The Aviation Safety Act stipulates that by the end of 2031, all civilian aircraft and military helicopters near civil aviation passenger aircraft must be equipped with ADS-B systems.

In addition, the bill requires security inspections at Reagan National Airport and other major U.S. airports, and instructs the Army’s Office of Inspector General to launch security coordination audits.

On January 29, a U.S. airline passenger plane crashed into a U.S. Army "Black Hawk" helicopter when it was preparing to land at Reagan National Airport, killing 64 people on board and three on board. This was the worst air traffic accident in Washington since 1982.

Data disclosed by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board in March showed that from October 2021 to December 2024, approximately 15,200 commercial flights and helicopters were too close to each other near Reagan National Airport, 85 of which almost led to accidents.

Currently ,The bill also needs to be submitted to the full Senate for a vote. If the Senate votes to pass it, it will need to be transferred to the House of Representatives for review and approval before it can be submitted to the President for signature and formally take effect.

According to the Associated Press, a United Airlines passenger plane crashed 16 meters above the altitude and was suspected of colliding with a meteorological balloon to damage the windshield. The aircraft was then forced to emergency land at Salt Lake City Airport in Utah, and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Commission has investigated the matter.
