Canada says Israel wants to change its stance on "arresting Israeli Prime Minister on entry"

In response to Canadian Prime Minister Carney’s statement that “Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu will be arrested when he enters Canada,” Israel urged Canada to abandon this position.

An Israeli government spokesman said on the 21st that Carney "should reconsider this" and "welcomes" Netanyahu's visit to Canada. According to Israel, Canada's recognition of the Palestinian state is "fueling anti-Semitism in Canada."

Bloomberg published an interview with Carney last week. Reporters asked Carney: If Netanyahu came to Canada, would he fulfill former Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau's promise to arrest Netanyahu on war crimes charges? Carney answered in the affirmative.

Carney said Netanyahu’s opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state was not only contrary to the UN Charter, but also to the Canadian government’s decades-long stance.

The International Criminal Court, based in The Hague, the Netherlands, issued an arrest warrant in 2024 against Netanyahu on charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes in connection with Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip. According to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Court, once an arrest warrant has been issued, has a legal obligation to enforce it, and should carry out an arrest when the party enters its territory.

In September this year, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, France and other countries announced their recognition of the State of Palestine.
