Thailand's former prime minister, Petun Tan, on October 22 announced his resignation as the leader of the Thai Party, so that the Thai party can carry out reforms and avoid being affected by the upcoming congressional elections.

Peitontan posted a message on social media that day that she had decided to resign as the leader of the Thai Party, hoping to use this as a starting point for restarting the Thai Party. Thailand is ushering in one of the most critical transition periods, especially the upcoming general election. She said the Pheu Thai Party needs to overhaul its organizational structure, operating processes and thinking model. Therefore, she chose to resign as party leader so that the party could carry out reforms and create a new and more complete party.

Petonthan also said that after she resigned as the leader of the party, she was still a member of the Thai Party.

Thai media analysts believe that Petun Tan's resignation from the party's leadership position is related to his resignation from the prime minister's position in August this year.In the Thai parliamentary election, the party's leader needed to sign the party's candidate nomination documents, and Petun Tan's resignation from the party's leadership position was to avoid causing impact.

In August last year, Petonthan became the second female prime minister and the youngest prime minister in Thailand's history as prime minister-elect for the Thai party candidate, but in June this year, due to the leakage of a recording of a call with Cambodian Senate President Hunsen on the situation at the border of Thailand, the Thai Constitutional Court ruled on August 29 that Petonthan's practices in the case violated the relevant constitutional provisions and dismissed him as prime minister.

Senior officials in the Thai Party told the media that Pete's resignation from the party's leadership position was to "save" the Thai Party, so as to prevent her dismissal of the prime minister's position from being used as a "political tool".

According to Thailand's "New News" newspaper, Peitontan's announcement to resign as party leader coincides with Thailand's current Prime Minister Anutin's suggestion that Parliament might be dissolved before January 31, 2026. Report analysis believes that since September this year, Proud Thai Party candidates have won a big victory in parliamentary by-elections in two constituencies to become Proud Thai Party candidates, indicating that Proud Thai Party may become the leader in future parliamentary elections from the country's third largest party. This gave Anutin confidence.

The report also said that Petongtan and his father Thaksin Shinawatra recently suffered setbacks, which led some former political allies and supporters of the Thai Party to switch to the Bhumjaithai Party camp. The Supreme Court of Thailand ruled in September that Thaksin's hospitalization instead of serving his sentence was illegal and invalid. Petongtan accompanied Thaksin to court on the day of the judgment, and Thaksin was sent to Bangkok special prison area to serve his sentence after the judgment on that day.

The Thai Party was born out of the Thai Love Thai Party founded by Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister of Thailand and the father of Petongtan. Thaksin is one of the influential and controversial political figures in Thailand. He has been Thailand's prime minister since 2001.
