European leaders including Macron, Merkel and Meloni jointly urge EU to make substantial changes

[Global Network Reporter Jiang Ailing] According to Reuters, a letter seen by the media on the 21st local time showed that leaders of the 19 member states of the European Union jointly wrote a letter to European Council President Antonio Costa, urging the EU to launch a new round of legislative "review, reduction and restriction" actions to improve the competitiveness of the EU's economy.

The letter, signed by leaders such as German Prime Minister Merts, French President Macron and Italian Prime Minister Meloni, was issued ahead of the European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday (23), stating, “We want to preserve the core values that the EU represents – freedom, security and prosperity. To this, we must change its direction, not a small adjustment, but a substantial change.”

The letter called for “a systematic review of all EU regulations to eliminate superfluous regulations” and said “simplification is key to boosting competitiveness.”

"As of December 2025, the president of the European Commission should regularly send letters to EU leaders to update developments before each European Council meeting," the European edition of the US Political News Network quoted the letter as saying.

Heiner Hekkenhof, head of the German Banking Association, said recently that the fragmented regulatory framework in Europe has hindered their development, “because Europe is still a ‘group’ of national regulations, many companies are looking forward,” and “we urgently need to solve this problem.”
