Financial Associated Press, October 22 (Editor Xia Junxiong) On Tuesday (October 21) local time, artificial intelligence (AI) research company OpenAI released a new web browser powered by AI-ChatGPT Atlas, which is in direct competition with Google's Chrome browser.

Influenced by the news, Google’s share price fell by more than 4 percent on Tuesday.

OpenAI said that the appearance and user experience of Atlas are similar to those of traditional browsers, but its biggest feature is that it is built with the generative AI chatbot ChatGPT as its core. This means that users can directly call ChatGPT on any web page to achieve functions such as summarizing content, asking questions, or performing tasks.

“We think AI represents a decade-on-a-year opportunity for people to rethink what browsers should be,” Sam Altman, CEO of OpenIA, said at a live broadcast conference that day.

At present, the Atlas browser is open to macOS users worldwide.OpenAI says the versions of Windows, iOS and Android will be available soon.

An advanced function of Atlas is "Agent Mode", which allows the browser to perform operations on the network instead of the user after obtaining the user's authorization-based on the information it learns from the user's browsing record and query intention, it automatically clicks, searches and sorts out the web page, and explains its thinking and execution process in real time.

Altman explains, “It’s helping you use the internet.”

As more and more Internet users rely on AI to get answers, the search entry dispute is growing. For OpenAI, being the main gateway for users to the Internet may allow the company to attract more traffic and earn revenue from digital advertising.

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT currently has more than 800 million users, but most of them are free users.OpenAI is currently in a loss state and is actively exploring ways to profit.

Atlas needs to face a strong challenge from Chrome, which currently has about 3 billion users worldwide and has integrated Google's own large AI model Gemini.

Another competitor is Perplexity AI, an AI startup that launched a browser called Comet earlier this year.
