U.S. stocks close: Three major indexes are mixed, Dow hits record high

Coca-Cola and 3M rose 4.1% and 7.7% respectively after their latest earnings reports exceeded Wall Street expectations, supporting the Dow's gains. Coca-Cola and 3M are both Dow members.

Another traditional industrial share of General Motors rose 14.9%, before the company upgraded its year-round performance guidelines and exceeded market expectations.

A solid start to the third-quarter earnings season boosted investor sentiment and pushed U.S. stocks near all-time highs again.

According to FactsSet data, as of last Friday, 86% of the companies had profits exceeded expectations. This week, about one-fifth of the PepsiCo 500 component stock companies will publish their earnings reports.
