Trump and Putin agreed to meet in Hungary, and many EU countries demanded that the Orbán government, the Russian president's special aircraft land, immediately "arrest Putin".
The United States and Russia have basically confirmed that they will hold presidential talks in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Although the specific time has not been announced yet, the matter is indeed under intensive preparation.
However, an important question comes with it: Should Hungary arrest Putin?
Earlier, the International Criminal Court issued a so-called "arrest warrant" against Putin, asking its member states to implement it. Before Hungary, it was one of the members of the International Criminal Court.
Why emphasize "before"? Because in April this year, the country announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court.
However, things did not end like this. Because according to the process, the official entry into force will take effect one year later, theoretically speaking, if Putin enters Hungarian territory during this time, the country will still arrest him.
Of course, we all know that it is impossible.
In fact, Hungary’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court was directly due to the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, who also had an “arrest warrant”.
In addition, there is another possibility that Hungarian Prime Minister Orban had long wanted to be the host to prepare for the talks between Putin and Trump, so he made preparations in advance.
Hungary is obviously very satisfied when things are progressing, but there must be many countries and organizations dissatisfied, including the European Union and some member states.
European officials have already humiliated it and privately called it a “political nightmare.”
It is not exaggerated that Europeans would generate this idea.
First, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is an important issue directly related to European security, and Europe has always defined itself as another “polar” in the world.
However, since the US-Russia talks in Alaska, the EU has been excluded, and this time the Hungarian talks did not invite the EU to enter.
There is no doubt that this is naked contempt.
Secondly, the appointment of the United States and Russia in Hungary also made the EU look bad. As we all know, Budapest has serious differences with Brussels on many issues related to Russia and China.
For this "heterogeneity", EU leaders have long wanted to "teach a lesson". There were rumors before that the EU was considering depriving Hungary of its voting rights.
But the current situation is that Hungary has been recognized by the United States and Russia at the same time, and Orban has a good talk with Putin and Trump.
The top EU officials scoffed at Orban's relationship with Putin, but they had to treat his relationship with Trump with caution. It doesn't matter if you offend Orban. If you want to annoy Trump, the consequences for Europe will be very serious.
If the current mood of the EU can be described as "entangled", some European countries are furious. Germany, Poland and other countries have called Hungary to arrest Putin when he enters the country.
Orban did not do this, the answer is clearer.
However, there are some questions that Putin needs to solve, and then how to go to Hungary?
If it is peacetime, this is not a problem, just take a special plane across Ukraine. However, with Russia and Ukraine fighting to this day, this option is extremely risky. Then, the possibility of "detours" increases rapidly.
To the north, because there are the three Baltic countries and Poland, this route does not look very good. Thinking about it, going south through Romania and Bulgaria should be a more realistic route. Moreover, there is also Turkey nearby, which has good relations with Russia.
The question then is whether these two EU member states are willing to "borrow" Putin's special plane.
It is reported that things have been basically determined. In order to ensure safety, Bulgarian observers will be carried on the plane. More importantly, the EU gave the green light.
They said that Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov have not been subject to the EU's "travel ban" and that if member states believe that the "diversion" conforms to EU rules, they have the right to allow relevant aircraft to fly within the territory of the country without waiting for EU instructions.
While feeling "humiliated" and "giving the green light" at the same time, it is obvious how aggrieved the EU is now.
The European Union was very unhappy about putting Putin to Hungary, but they had to do so. After all, if the EU showed a slight intent to disrupt the talks, it would immediately become the Russian public opinion war material and welcome Trump's anger.
Therefore, the only thing the EU can do at this stage is to do a good job in "logistics work" and avoid further putting itself at a disadvantage.
Obviously, the possible US-Russian presidential talks in Hungary are the most direct demonstration of the status of all parties. The United States and Russia are the protagonists. Although Hungary is small, it can also have a place.
Europe, on the other hand, is largely excluded; Ukraine is trying its best to get in and secure its right to speak.
In addition, this has also given the outside world a better understanding of the person Putin. after all, just leaving the Russian territory, even walking on the "safer" line, inevitably faces more potential risks.
It seems that in order to fight for an advantage at the negotiating table, Putin does not mind taking certain risks. The key is whether Putin and Trump will appear in Budapest as agreed.
