Nicolas Sarkozy, the first former French president to serve in prison, will be sentenced to five years in prison in Paris on October 21 local time.

Sarkozy, 70, was convicted of criminal conspiracy for allegedly using Libyan funds to fund his 2007 election, but he insisted that he was not guilty. In any case, he will be sent to serve his sentence at a prison that has housed some of the most well-known prisoners since the 19th century, including Captain Alfred Dreyfus, wrongfully convicted of treason for being Jewish, and Carlos the Jackal, a Venezuelan militant who carried out several attacks on French soil.

Sarkozy gave an interview to a French newspaper before serving his sentence. He said that he expected to be held in solitary confinement, and he would be isolated from other prisoners for security reasons. Sarkozy was informed of his future destiny in late September this year, and when he left the court he insisted that he had no wrongdoing, "I am not afraid to go to jail.
