The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on October 20 saying that Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov discussed the consensus reached by the two heads of state on the previous telephone talks with U.S. Secretary of State Rubio on the same day. U.S. President Donald Trump said on October 20 that he does not believe that Ukraine will the final victory. Ukrainian President Zelensky said on the same day that if invited, he would join the talks with U.S. Russian heads.

The United States and Russia engage in "constructive discussions"

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday that Lavrov had "constructive discussions" on the consensus reached by the two heads of state on the phone.

The statement said that the two sides discussed possible specific measures to implement relevant consensus. However, the statement did not disclose further details.

Deputy State Department chief spokesman Piaget also issued a statement on the same day that Rubio and Lavrov's telephone conversation discussed the follow-up to the US and Russian presidents' 16th conversation. the statement said the upcoming talks between the two presidents on the Ukraine issue were "critical" and provided an opportunity for the US and Russia to jointly promote a lasting solution to the conflict in Russia.

On the 16th, Russian President Putin made a regular phone call with the US President. Trump then posted on social media that he would have a face-to-face meeting with Putin in Budapest, Hungary. On the 17th, after Trump met with Ukrainian President Zelensky in the White House, he called on the Russian side to "on the ground" a ceasefire, each declaring "victory".

According to several U.S. media reports, Trump pressured Ukraine to compromise on territorial issues to quickly a ceasefire during talks with Zelensky on 17 November, and Zelensky told the media when leaving the White House that discussions on territorial issues were a “difficult” and “sensitive” topic, and reiterated Ukraine’s need for “strong security guarantees”.

In August this year, Trump and Putin held talks in Alaska, the United States, but no agreement was reached. Russia-Ukraine ceasefire negotiations have so far reached a deadlock.

Trump: I don’t think Ukraine can win, but it’s possible

Trump said in a statement at the White House that he didn’t think Ukraine would win the final win, adding that “they can still win, the war is a strange thing, anything can happen.”

The day before, Trump expressed his views on the Russia-Ukraine conflict on the presidential special plane Air Force One, saying that Russia and Ukraine should "separate" the Donbas area according to the current front line, delineate a border ceasefire, and withdraw their troops. American media interpreted that according to Trump's plan, most of the land in the Donbas area would be handed over to Russia.

Trump said that the existing front between Russia and Ukraine has been formed. "If you have to argue that this land belongs to you and that land belongs to me, you must know that there are countless complicated possibilities. So my proposition is: they should cease fire immediately on the current front."

When reporters asked what to do with the Donbas area, Trump replied: "Just maintain the status quo. That land is currently divided, and I think 78% of it is controlled by Russia. Let it remain as it is. They can hold further consultations later, but my opinion is that the current front line should be used to delineate a ceasefire, return home, and stop fighting."

Donbass mainly consists of two regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, and Ukraine has been fighting for control of Donbass.

Earlier this year, Trump pressured Ukraine to make concessions on territorial issues to end the Ukrainian conflict, and in late September also declared that Ukraine had the ability to “take back the whole of Ukraine” and restore the status quo of the territory. On the day of talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky on October 17, when asked by reporters whether Ukraine needed a peace exchange for territory, Trump simply said: “Nobody knows.”

Zelensky: willing to join US-Russian talks and not accept Russian request

Zelensky spoke on the 20th that the Russian-American leader would meet in Budapest, Hungary, and said he would join the talks with the US-Russian head of state if invited. The day before, Zelensky reiterated Ukraine's position on the ceasefire conditions.

According to a report by the Interfax news agency of Ukraine, Zelensky said in a meeting with reporters on the 19th that Uzbekistan's position on the conditions of the armistice has not changed. Russia demands that the Ukrainian army fully withdraw from the Donetsk region and Lugansk region of Donbas. Uzbekistan refused to accept this.

Zelensky said that during his visit to Washington last week, he "explained" to Trump and U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East that Ukraine's position on the issue had not changed. Witkov communicated to him the Russian idea that regions such as Donetsk and Lugansk had been "publicly invaded" and written into the Russian constitution. Zelensky declined to accept this claim and said that Ukraine could also write the Russian "two states" into the constitution, but Russia would not withdraw its troops from there.

The Washington Post that Putin “suggested” on Friday that Russia was willing to give up parts of Russia’s controlled territory of Zaporozhye and Helsinki as a condition for ending the conflict in exchange for Russia’s full control of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. Witkov proposed that Ukraine consider giving up control of Donbas as a condition for a cease-fire with Russia during a meeting with the visiting Zelensky on Thursday.
