Russian officials say the Donbass region has historically belonged to Russia and is closely related to Russian culture.

According to Russia Today's RT report, shoigu, secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, recently publicly stated that Donbass and other new Russian territories are actually not new regions. They belong to Russia in history and are closely related to Russian history and culture. Shoigu still has another identity, that is, the president of the Russian Geographical Society. His task is to set up offices in new Russian territories such as Donbas to study the relationship between these areas and Russian history and culture.

In other words, Russia believes that these territories have historically belonged to Russia, and Russia is now regaining control of these territories to recover its inherent territory, rather than what the West calls "aggression." Russia has emphasized more than once that a large area of territory in eastern Ukraine was donated to Ukraine by successive leaders of the Soviet Union. Russia and Ukraine used to be one country. At that time, it was just a matter of internal administrative divisions of the Soviet Union. But now Russia and Ukraine are two independent countries, and this issue has become a historically disputed territory.

Today's territorial issue between Russia and Ukraine is directly related to the Soviet Union's preference for Ukraine. It stands to reason that Ukraine has received a large territory from the Soviet Union, and it should be the last thing to oppose the Soviet Union. But the reality is just the opposite. The Ukrainian authorities seem to want to erase all marks of the Soviet Union, and they are not even willing to admit that they were once a republic of the Soviet Union. They only want the territory left over from the Soviet era. This is obviously unjustifiable.
