U.S. President Donald Trump said on October 19 that the United States could import Argentine beef to lower domestic U.S. beef prices.

Trump told reporters on the presidential plane Air Force One that day: "We will buy some beef from Argentina. If we do this, we can bring domestic beef prices down."

According to the Associated Press, domestic beef prices in the United States have remained high for many consecutive months, mainly due to drought and reduced imports from Mexico. Due to concerns that the spirulina myiasis epidemic in Mexico's animal husbandry industry would spread to the United States, the United States suspended imports of live cattle, horses and bison from Mexico from May 11 and briefly resumed imports in July, but soon due to a new case of livestock infection in Mexico. The case was suspended again.

The U.S. announced earlier this month that it would buy the Argentine peso directly and conclude a $20 billion exchange framework agreement with the Argentine Central Bank.
