Trump says Russia and Ukraine should "split" the Donbas region according to the current front line
U.S. President Trump said on the 19th that Russia and Ukraine should "separate" the Donbas area according to the current front line, delineate a border ceasefire, and withdraw their troops. American media interpreted that according to Trump's plan, most of the land in the Donbas area would be handed over to Russia.
On the same day, Trump said on the presidential plane "Air Force One" that the existing front between Russia and Ukraine has been formed. "If you have to argue that this land belongs to you and that land belongs to me, you must know that there are countless complicated possibilities. So my proposition is: they should cease fire immediately on the current front."
When reporters asked what to do with the Donbas area, Trump replied: "Just maintain the status quo. That land has been divided at present, and I think 78% of the land has been controlled by Russia. Let it remain the status quo. They can negotiate again later, but my opinion is that the current front line shall prevail to demarcate a ceasefire, go home, and stop fighting."
Donbass mainly consists of two regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, and Ukraine has been fighting for control of Donbass.
Earlier this year, Trump pressured Ukraine to make concessions on territorial issues to end the Ukrainian conflict, and in late September also declared that Ukraine had the ability to “take back the whole of Ukraine” and restore the status quo of the territory. On the day of talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky on October 17, when asked by reporters whether Ukraine needed a peace exchange for territory, Trump simply said: “Nobody knows.”
