U.S. Vice President Admits Middle Eastern Peace Process Is “Temporary”

According to the U.S. cable news network (CNN), U.S. Vice President Watson admitted in an interview on the evening of 19 local time that the Middle East peace process was "time-broken".

Wans acknowledged the vulnerability of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and said it would be complicated to anticipate a “time breakout” as the agreement continues to be implemented.

CNN quoted sources as saying that Wans is expected to lead a delegation to Israel in the coming days, along with his fellow U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Witkov and President Trump’s son-in-law Kushner. Last month, according to Israeli Channel 12, Trump had appointed Kushner to develop a plan for reconstruction and governance after the end of the war in Gaza.

According to the report, on the 19th, when Vance was asked about the above visit, he refused to directly confirm his itinerary. "We may (will go). We are trying to figure it out. Obviously, (we) want to see how things are going".

CNN mentioned that Vance's remarks came as two Israeli soldiers were recently killed in Gaza and Israel subsequently launched air strikes. The White House said last weekend that it would pay close attention to developments. According to Agence France-Presse, after Israel's air strikes on Gaza, Trump said on the 19th that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas is still in effect.

It is understood that earlier on the 19th, the Israel Defense Forces said that in the morning, when Israeli troops demolished the military facilities of Palestinian armed groups in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah, a group of armed men sneaked out of the tunnel and opened fire on two Israeli excavators. Israel said the attack occurred in Israeli-controlled areas east of the "Yellow Line" and was carried out by Hamas and a serious violation of the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza. The attack killed two Israeli soldiers and injured three. "In response," Israeli forces carried out air strikes and artillery attacks on Hamas military targets in the Rafah area, and subsequently expanded the scope of the attack. However, the Qassam Brigade, an armed wing affiliated with Hamas, denied that there had been "any incident or conflict" in Rafah and reiterated that Hamas was "still fully implementing the ceasefire agreement."

The Israeli army said in a follow-up statement on the evening of the 19th that according to instructions from high-level Israeli government officials, the Israeli army has begun to re-implement the ceasefire agreement after carrying out a series of strikes against Hamas. "The Israeli army will continue to implement the ceasefire agreement and Respond resolutely to any violation of the agreement."

The first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement came into effect on the 10th. Hamas has released a total of 20 Israeli detainees and handed over the remains of some detainees, while Israel has released nearly 2000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees. However, in recent days, the Netanyahu government and Hamas have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement, and the fragility of the agreement has become prominent.
