Titan crash follow-up: an SD card accidentally survived, successfully extracted 12 photos and videos

The submarine Titan, operated by the U.S. OceanGate Company, sank into the Atlantic Ocean on June 18, 2023, and disconnected.

After five days of search and rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard issued a statement on June 23, 2023 that the Titanic submarine was found at the bottom of the ocean about 500 meters from the ship, the submarine had a "catastrophic internal explosion", and five crew members were killed.

Subsequently, investigators found a very unexpected survivor-an ordinary 512GB SanDisk SD card when investigating this catastrophic accident.

This SD memory card is only worth US$62 (IT Home Note: the current exchange rate is approximately RMB 439.9). Thanks to the voltage-resistant camera, this SD card is located on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean but is not damaged by the deep sea high pressure.

According to the report, researchers found it in a SubC Rayfin Mk2 Benthic Camera professional camera, located very close to the original debris area. Though the camera’s lenses and circuit boards were damaged, the storage cabinet remained sealed, and engineers eventually managed to remove the SD card in a laboratory in Newfoundland.

Fortunately, the solid-state memory card doesn't have any physical damage (it just has encryption). With the help of the manufacturer, the investigators successfully extracted 12 photos and 9 videos, which have resolutions of 12.3 MP and 4K UHD respectively.

Unfortunately, this SD card doesn’t store an image of the submarine’s last moment, as the camera is set to send data to an external hard drive during the task.
