From "tough shouting" to "pragmatic cooling"

On the morning of 18 October, the Chinese leader and Deputy Prime Minister of the State Council, Ho Li Feng, held a video call with U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent and Trade Representative Gerrill, exchanged on important issues in bilateral economic and trade relations, and agreed to hold a new round of Sino-U.S. economic and trade consultations as soon as possible.

But just a few days ago, Trump also spoke publicly, threatening to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese goods from November 1st, which seems like the next second will burn the fire of the trade war.

But nobody thought that just a few days passed and the wind direction changed.

On October 17, local time, in an interview video released by Fox Business News Network, Trump's attitude made a U-turn, admitting that imposing high tariffs on China was "unsustainable" and saying that "this is the number."

Before shouting to raise taxes is true, but doing so the United States itself can not withstand, the underlying word is to get the Chinese side to sit down and talk, don't really make the situation unresolvable.

This is not the first time Trump has "changed his mouth" on trade issues, but this time it is different.

There is no winner in the trade war, and the industrial chain cannot stand to be torn

He has always thought of pushing China to make concessions with a tough gesture, saying in his mouth that "tariffs can win the trade war", but does not mention the cost that U.S. and consumers are bearing.

As for the U.S. chip giant NVIDIA, influenced by the U.S. technology blockade against China, the company that previously accounted for 95% of the Chinese advanced chip market, now the share dropped directly to zero.

Investors voted with their feet, telling the U.S. government to continue fighting a trade war and everyone's money bags will be damaged.

Not to mention the American people, the tax increase on Chinese goods exported to the United States, and the final cost is passed on to consumers. It is these real pressures that make Trump have to soften.

In the interview, he also specifically emphasized that China and the United States "maintain good relations" and are "optimistic" about the future trade prospects, and even said that the two countries "must reach a fair agreement."

This word sounds like a good demonstration, in fact, is to give yourself a ladder, after all, before speaking too full, now want to talk, can never directly admit "I was wrong before", can only be paved in this way, suggesting the next concession is not "weakness", but "to reach a fair agreement."

And this video call on October 18 is the concrete landing of this "softening attitude".

The two sides chatted for nearly two hours. The core was to implement the consensus reached in the previous phone call between the two heads of state and put out key issues in economic and trade relations for discussion.

The most important consensus was the agreement to hold a new round of face-to-face consultations as soon as possible, and Bessent also confirmed on social media, ¡°We will continue face-to-face discussions next week.¡±

It is reported that this face-to-face meeting will most likely be held in Malaysia. This is also the fifth round of trade negotiations between China and the United States. Whether the current "easing signal" can be turned into actual results depends on this time.

What is even more interesting is that Trump also made a "big move" on social media, saying that he would meet with China at the APEC Leaders' Summit in South Korea.

This is a higher-level exchange than economic and trade consultations, which shows that the U.S. is not only looking for breakthroughs in economic and trade issues, but also wants to stabilize the overall relationship through high-level interaction.

In the past, the United States always liked to deal with China "based on strength", but now it takes the initiative to meet on multilateral occasions. The change in mentality behind it is worth pondering.

Of course, the core of the US is so anxious to talk is still focusing on China's rare earths.

But this "trade cessation" is not a concession at all, after all, even if it is not a "cessation", the losses of American enterprises are also constantly expanding, and the "switch" of the trade war is not the US side said, really to continue to fight, China's countermeasures can be more accurate.
