Russia proposes to build “Putin-Trump tunnel” Zelensky says “not satisfied”

Russian Special Representative for Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation Kirill Dmitryev recently proposed to work with the United States to build a “Putin-Trump Tunnel” in the Beirut Strait to connect the two countries and jointly explore natural resources. U.S. President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Zelensky on the 17th, during which he was asked by reporters about the matter, Trump said the proposal was “interesting”, but Zelensky replied “unsatisfied”.

According to Agence France-Presse and Reuters, Dmitriyev put forward the above idea on American entrepreneur Musk's social media X platform on the evening of the 16th. He said the idea of building a "bridge of peace" between Russia and the U.S. state of Alaska dates back to the Cold War and released a draft route drawn that year and a possible route map for a new tunnel.

Dmitryev proposed the construction of the tunnel by Musk-owned tunnel construction company Bolling on the grounds that the cost of traditional pricing is more than $65 billion, but with Bolling's technology, the cost can be reduced to $8 billion.

Russia and Alaska are separated by the Bering Strait. The narrowest part of the strait is about 82 kilometers wide, while the closest distance between the islands belonging to the United States and Russia is only about 4 kilometers.

Just on the 16th, Trump made a phone call with Russian President Putin, then announced that the two heads of state would soon meet in Hungary's capital Budapest. Reuters that Dmitryev issued this proposal after the call, intending to build a tunnel to launch a "charming offensive" against the United States and restart the relations between the two countries.

Asked by reporters about the Russian proposal for a tunnel from Russia to Alaska, Trump said: “A tunnel from Russia to Alaska is ... interesting.”“He said he just learned about this potential cross-border project and asked Zelensky: “Mr. President, what do you think about this idea?”Zelensky replied: “I’m not happy with it.”

Musk has not yet made a public response to the Russian proposal.

Since Trump took office in January this year, the U.S. administration’s attitude toward Russia’s peace talks has changed again: from the initial rumor that it will end the conflict in 24 hours, to the subsequent claim that the U.S. will withdraw from the mediator, and then to the “joke.” On August 15, Trump and Putin held a face-to-face meeting between U.S. and Russian leaders in Anchorage, Alaska, for the first time in more than four years, but no agreement was reached.

Earlier this year, Trump pressured Ukraine to make concessions on territorial issues to end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and in late September declared that the Ukrainian side had the ability to “take back the whole of Ukraine”.On 17 September, when asked by reporters whether Ukraine needed to exchange territory for peace, Trump simply said: “No one knows,” he also ruled out the possibility of a recent tripartite meeting of US-Russian leaders.
