Russian Navy Arrives in the South China Sea

According to the US Newsweek website on October 16, this week, a Russian naval fleet arrived in the South China Sea.

The Russian Pacific Fleet announced on the 12th that the frigate "Marshal Shaposhnikov", the light frigate "Roar" and the large oil tanker "Boris Butorma" have arrived in Da Nang, Vietnam. The Russian Embassy called the visit a "friendly visit."

The Russian embassy said that representatives of the Russian and Vietnamese naval forces plan to hold a meeting where Russian sailors will visit the city’s landmark buildings. The ships will continue to carry out deployment missions in the Asia-Pacific region after the visit to the port.

In early October, the Russian Navy’s special navy fleet departed from the Far Eastern mother port in Vladivostok to carry out the deployment mission. During the journey to the South China Sea, the fleet twice approached Japanese territory, during which time it was monitored by the Japanese military.

Vietnam has long relied on Russian weapons and equipment. In recent years, Vietnam has deepened security and military ties with the United States and China. This time, the docking of Russian ships at Vietnam ports occurred against this background.

Despite the continuation of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Russiains a stable military presence in its eastern Pacific region. In October last year, the Russian military sent a naval special force to carry out Asia-Pacific missions, including visits to several Southeast Asian countries and exercises in the South China Sea.
