Lavrov: Russia will never join hands with the United States to put pressure on China, which is "unimaginable"

According to a report by Russian Television (RT) on the 16th, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said that Russia will never join forces with the United States to put pressure on China, calling the move "unimaginable."

According to Russian Kommersant, Lavrov was asked in an interview with the newspaper whether Russia might join hands with the United States to persuade China to join Russia-US nuclear disarmament negotiations. Lavrov made it clear: "Russia will not form an alliance with anyone against anyone, especially not against China. This is unimaginable."

Lavrov added that the two countries signed a series of bilateral treaties, “which clearly define the relationship between the two countries aimed at supporting each other, helping each other, enhancing the economic strength of the two countries, national defense capabilities and international status.”

The Russian Foreign Minister noted that the United States has been trying for years to pull China into the Russian-US nuclear disarmament negotiations, but “China has its own clear position.”

RT reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested to US President Trump at the end of September to extend the Russia-US New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which will expire on February 5, 2026, for another year. Trump called the proposal "a good idea," but the White House subsequently took no specific action. Previously, the Trump administration had repeatedly requested that China be included in the US-Russia nuclear disarmament negotiations. According to estimates by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Russia currently has the world's largest nuclear arsenal, with approximately 5459 nuclear warheads, while the United States has approximately 5177.

On September 27, the Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiangkun said that the Chinese and U.S. nuclear power is not at all on a single scale, the nuclear policy and strategic security environment of the two countries are also completely different, and demand that China join China and U.S. Russia in the trilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations is neither reasonable nor realistic. China pursues the nuclear weapons policy not first, adheres to its nuclear defense strategy, alwaysins its nuclear forces at the lowest level of national security needs, and does not engage in arms race with any country.
