Thailand welcomes the US action to crack down on online fraud in Southeast Asia!

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on October 16 that it welcomed and praised the recent U.S. countermeasures against Southeast Asian cyber-fraud groups, saying the measures were “fully consistent” with Thailand’s own efforts to combat cross-border crime.

The statement pointed out that the new actions announced by the United States on October 14th reflect the determination of the international community in combating transnational online fraud. Thailand emphasizes that the problem of cyber fraud and fraud centers not only endangers people inside and outside the region, but is also closely related to serious transnational crimes such as human trafficking, forced labor and money laundering, and must be eradicated through close cooperation between governments and relevant institutions.

Speaker and head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Neuhalde, said at a press conference that the U.S. action was highly aligned with Thailand’s current efforts. Thailand has been in close contact with the U.S. since the beginning of the year and has jointly tracked multinational fraud networks through the exchange of confidential information between security agencies.

Nikund pointed out that this issue is not limited to between Thailand and individual countries, but is a sub-regional, regional and even global challenge. Thailand is working with many countries and international organizations to promote the establishment of more efficient law enforcement mechanisms.

He also mentioned that South Korea has recently sent a special working group to Cambodia to combat transnational crime to protect its citizens. In this regard, Nefertiti said Thailand was one of the first countries to raise this issue and has long worked with Cambodia to tackle criminal activity through the Joint Border Commission (GBC) and the Regional Border Commission (RBC) mechanism.

Nikund revealed that Thailand has assisted a large number of non-Thai victims of fraud, including providing investigation data and assistance to the victim countries. Since the beginning of this year, Thailand has coordinated actions with many countries and promoted this issue to enter the ASEAN cooperation framework.

He stressed that Thailand is firmly committed to eliminating online fraud, telephone fraud gangs and human trafficking, and is willing to cooperate with all countries, including the United States, South Korea and ASEAN member countries, to take concrete actions to safeguard regional security and people's well-being.
