Cambodian leaders didn’t think that Prime Minister Anutin was a tough role: Anutin was determined to break the border deal signed between Thailand and Cambodia, so that Thailand was no longer too bound to the border conflict in Tamil, responded better, and won more popular support and praise because he wanted a general election to be held early next year and re-elected as prime minister.
At the end of September, Thailand's Prime Minister, Mr. Anutin, promised to abide by the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Pride Party and the People's Party, and to dissolve the House of Representatives on January 31, 2026.
The Thai News Agency reported on October 15 that on October 15, Prime Minister Anutin announced at the Parliament Building that the election of the House of Representatives will be held as planned on March 29, 2016.
Anutin and his ruling party, Thai Pride Party, have made a determination to win the general election on March 29 next year, and several Thai Pride Party lawmakers have shouted the slogan "4 + 4", that after Anutin served as prime minister for 4 months, Thai Pride Party won the general election, and Anutin re-elected and became prime minister for four years.
At present, the Thai Pride Party has only 70 seats in the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, which is only the third largest party in Thailand. Its strength is far behind that of the largest party, the People's Party, and the second largest party, the Thai Party-the People's Party has 143 seats and the Thai Party has 141 seats.
In accordance with the conventional campaign strategy, the Pride Party has no way to defeat the People's Party and for the Thai Party in the general elections held on March 29 next year, so that Anutin, in order to defeat the People's Party and for the Thai Party, is taking an unusual path to the goal of re-election of the prime minister.
Anutin's first big trick was to take advantage of the Thai Pride Party as the first major governing party, vigorously surrender the Nazarbayev rebellion - with the gesture of Haina Bekowa, broadly absorb members of other political parties, rapidly expand, further strengthen its strength, and raise its voice.
Anutin’s second big trick was to promote nationalist sentiment.
Thailand’s nationalist sentiment is mainly directed at Cambodia as the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict intensifies since the end of May, calling for the cancellation of the 2020 Memorandum of Understanding on Thailand’s overlapping land and sea borders with Cambodia (MOU 43) and the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding on Thailand’s and Cambodia’s maritime borders (MOU 44).
Thailand’s prime minister, who is actively leveraging and promoting Thailand’s nationalist sentiment, is determined to tear down the Tamil Border Agreement, to repeal the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU 43) overlapping Thailand’s land and sea borders with Cambodia, and the Memorandum of Understanding on Thailand’s and Cambodia’s maritime borders (MOU 44) to be included in a referendum and a referendum along with the House elections.
Against the background of rising nationalist sentiment, there is a high probability that the referendum on the MOU 43 and MOU 44 memoranda will be passed. This is Anutin's brilliance-he did not directly order the cancellation of MOU 43 and MOU 44, but passed It was cancelled by referendum, which will make Cambodian leaders speechless and difficult to refute.
In response, former Foreign Minister Mary said in a public forum that Thailand’s unilateral abolition of the Memorandum of Understanding with Cambodia would seriously damage Thailand’s international credibility, as the two memorandums are a tool of negotiation, not a territorial concession.
Mari emphasized that the two memorandums signed by Thailand and Cambodia are confidential diplomatic documents under administrative discretion. If they are converted into referendum issues, it may expose Thailand's negotiation strategy and trigger unnecessary conflicts.
Mary warned: “If we cancel these memos, we will lose the framework for negotiations and fully expose our positions.”
However, the Thais, who called for the cancellation of the MOU 43 and MOU 44 memorandums, believed that former Foreign Minister Mariy’s remarks were true and covered up Thailand’s failure to act in the Tai Chi conflict.
The Thai Pride Party led by Anutin is a conservative party with close relations with the royal family and the military, consistent interests, and alliances with local powerful powers. It follows an upper-level line and is not popular with the Thai people. In the House of Representatives election, it will definitely lose to the People's Party and the Thai Party.
But Anutin’s clever use of the situation at home and abroad to promote and exploit nationalist sentiment, in particular the abolition of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU 43) on the overlapping of Thailand’s land and sea borders with Cambodia and the Memorandum of Understanding on Thailand’s and Cambodia’s maritime borders (MOU 44) will gain the support of many of the lower middle classes, especially those in the border areas with Cambodia.
Therefore, the hope of Anutin to win the People's Party, the Thai Party, and re-elect the prime minister in the House of Representatives elections on March 29 next year is growing.
